Nail polish, in some form, has been around since about 3000 B.C. and modern nail polish was developed in the 1930’s.

Of course in that time, the formulations, ingredients, colors, and types of polish have changed substantially. We now hear terms like ‘nail lacquer,’ ‘nail enamel,’ ‘gels,’ and ‘acrylics’ in addition to ‘nail polish.’

Wondering what all those terms really mean and what the difference is? So were we, so we did some research and found out that there is actually a great deal of debate as to the difference between lacquer, enamel, and polish.

Some companies say that lacquer and enamel last longer than polish, yet others say that they are identical. Without an industry standard defining the difference, companies are able to call their products whatever they wish. From a practical standpoint, consider lacquer, enamel, and polish to be the same product. They are all a nail color which is painted onto your natural nails and does not require any special curing process.

Gel and acrylics, however, are indeed different from each other and from polish. Gels are brushed onto nails in much the same way as standard nail polish with a base coat, color coats, and top coat. The difference with gel is that each coat must be cured or hardened under an LED or UV light for 2-3 minutes. Gels appear similar to standard polish, however they are stronger and last longer (up to 14 days).

Acrylics are artificial nails created by application of a liquid monomer and powder polymer. Together these ingredients harden to form a transparent layer over your natural nails. Nail polish is added on top of the acrylic base.

How We Chose The Type and Color

Once we chose the brands, we had to choose the specific type of nail coloring to compare. We elected to review nail polishes/lacquers since they are the most popular.

Each brand of nail polish comes in a wide variety of colors which can make comparison difficult. To mitigate this, we decided to go with black as it is a more universal color.

We used “Licorice” by Essie and “Black Onyx” by OPI.

Price Differences Between Essie vs OPI

As far as price goes, for the black nail polishes which we compared, Essie and OPI were nearly identical. For different collections/types of polish, pricing may vary.

Despite some differences in bottle shape and handle height/color, our first impression was that the polishes themselves looked virtually identical.

Size: At 15 mL/0.5 fl. oz., the OPI bottle is slightly larger than the 13.5 mL/0.46 fl. oz. Essie bottle.

Applicator handle/brush: The handle is larger on the OPI bottle and the brush is wider and flatter. In contrast, Essie has a smaller, shorter handle and a narrower, rounder brush.

How We Tested

When testing our nail polish we focused on two of the most important success factors for a DIY manicure: ease of application and polish longevity.

Nail Polish Application Test

If a nail polish isn’t easy to apply, it can not only be a frustrating experience, but it is also hard to get a professional finished look.

To evaluate the ease of application for Essie and OPI polishes, we applied each polish and noted how ergonomic the applicator handle felt as well as how well the brush actually applied the polish to the nail.

The OPI handle with its non-slippery, matte finish and tapered shape felt much nicer in our hand than the slippery, smooth finish and straight handle of the Essie brush. Something about the Essie version just felt flimsy to us.

When it came to actually applying the polish, OPI again stood out. We found that the flat, wide OPI brush made it easy to apply an even, smooth coat of polish in the standard 3 stroke application method used by salon professionals.

We tried the same technique with Essie, but the round, thin brush did not cooperate and instead we found ourselves having to use many brush strokes to attempt to replicate the quality of the OPI application.

Nail Polish Longevity Test

No matter how great your nail polish looks when first applied, if it doesn’t last a reasonable amount of time, it hardly seems worth the cost and effort.

To compare the longevity of Essie and OPI nail polishes, we applied 2 coats of Essie nail polish to the left hand of our model and 2 coats of OPI to the right. Since we didn’t want our results to be impacted by external factors, we decided to forgo base coats and top coats.

Our model wore the polishes for 5 days while being sure to consistently handle common objects with both hands throughout the day to evenly test the durability of both brands. We took photos of her hands at the end of each day and compared the results.

Day 1: Both the Essie and OPI manicures were 100% intact with no chips

Day 2: The Essie manicure had a slight dent in the polish on one finger. OPI had chipping starting on the tip of one finger and the base of another.

Day 3: Essie had an additional small chip on one finger. OPI now had chips on 3 fingers.

Day 4: Essie and OPI both had chips on all 5 fingers.

Day 5: Essie and OPI both had chips on all 5 fingers.

While both Essie and OPI ended up with chips on all 5 fingers by day 4, the Essie chips were not quite as large as the OPI ones. Essie also didn’t feel like it chipped quite as easily as OPI did.

How To Make Nail Polish Last Longer

Before you get started painting your nails your favorite OPI color, here are some professional tips to help make your at-home manicure last even longer:

1) Nail Preparation

Nail preparation is everything; polish doesn’t adhere well to nails that have ridges or are covered in remnants of old polish. Before you even break out your polish, take the time to properly prepare your nails.

To smooth out ridges, run a buffing block over the nail bed. A four-sided buffing block is perfect for not only getting rid of ridges, but also for eliminating stains caused by wearing dark polish without a base coat. Finish up with the finest side of the block to leave your nails with a smooth surface.

Finally, use nail polish remover on each nail to remove any residual polish, lotion, or body oils that can interfere with the successful application of new polish.

2) Base Coat

We have all skipped, or at least been tempted to skip, a base coat when doing a DIY manicure, but there is a reason the professionals always take the time for this step.

It fills in any irregularities left on the nail and creates a nice even surface for the polish to adhere to. If you skip it, your polish won’t go on as smoothly and evenly or hold up as well.

3) Drying Time Between Coats

There is a reason it takes over an hour to get a salon manicure. Professionals make sure each coat of polish is completely dry before applying another layer. If you want your at home polish to hold up as well as a salon version, follow the pros’ lead and be sure to allow plenty of drying time between coats.

4) Thickness of Coats

Speaking of multiple coats, once your base coat is dry, you should be applying your polish in two thin coats with plenty of drying time in between.

While you may be tempted to do one thicker coat and save time, this will make your polish much more likely to peel or chip than if you take the time to do it right.

5) Top Coat

Just as with the base coat, a top coat is a crucial step in a long-lasting manicure. It is a protective layer that keeps the underlying polish from getting damaged. Add a top coat once your second coat of polish is dry.

To extend the life of your manicure even longer, add a second top coat a few days later.

6) Application Technique

As you apply the base coat, polish, and top coat, be sure to apply the products not only to the nail surface itself, but also just over the tip of the nail onto the raw edge which you buffed/filed.

This seals the nail, helping to keep water from creeping in and causing premature chipping.

If you’ve ever found yourself faced with the unpleasant prospect of brushing out a tangled up head of hair, you may have wondered what actually causes our hair to tangle and what we can do to avoid it.

When deciding which two products deserved to be in the running for the best detangling hairbrush, we first decided to narrow our search to the value market. Yes, there are high end products out there with great reviews, but do you really want to fork out $230 for a hairbrush? Didn’t think so, and neither do we!

The two brushes we chose have emerged as top value picks among consumers. Both have great reviews, both are very popular, and there seems to be a lot of debate as to which is better.

As companies, Wet Brush and Tangle Teezer both got their start selling detangling hair brushes. Since then they have branched out and they now carry a full line of brushes for all hair types and purposes.

As our focus was specifically on detangling, we decided to test the “Wet Brush Pro” from Wet Brush vs the “Salon Elite” from Tangle Teezer.

Tangle Teezer’s differentiating feature lies in the “two-tiered teeth system technology” which its inventor says “banishes tangles [and] knots and helps prevent breakage and damage.” The award winning design features longer teeth for detangling paired with shorter teeth for smoothing the hair cuticle. This is said to result in glossy, healthy looking hair.

First Impressions

Wet Brush

Our first impression of the Wet Brush was that it looked like…well, just a normal unassuming hairbrush. The Wet Brush has a full length plastic handle and its proprietary “Intelliflex” ball tipped bristles are mounted to a rubber cushion secured to a plastic body.

Tangle Teezer

The Tangle Teezer on the other hand, is small and compact. Rather than being mounted to a handle, the curved body of the brush is shaped to fit in the palm of your hand. The “two-tiered teeth system technology” consisting of an overlapping series of taller and shorter plastic bristles is mounted directly to the underside of the brush body.

The Tangle Teezer’s diminutive size seems to make it a good option for traveling or to throw in your purse or car for on-the-go usage.

Price Comparison – Wet Brush vs. Tangle Teezer

When we compared average pricing, we found that the Wet Brush sold for an average of $8-$9. The Tangle Teezer’s average retail was $11-$13.

Both price points are solidly within the value hairbrush category, however the Wet Brush got the win here for an average $3-4 cost savings over the Tangle Teezer.

Handle/Grip Comparison

Given their very different body styles, we decided it was important to test the ergonomics of the handle/grip when actually using each of the brushes.

The traditional handle of the Wet Brush felt intuitive and easy to use.

The contoured Tangle Teezer body grip fit nicely in our hand and seemed reasonably easy to use as well.

Neither brush was uncomfortable to hold, still we found ourselves preferring the standard size and shape of the Wet Brush handle. This comparison was close, however the slight edge went to Wet Brush.

How We Tested

Now that we knew what we liked as far as aesthetics and ergonomics went, we got down to the make-or-break defining tests for a detangling hairbrush – does it actually detangle hair? Specifically, we wanted to compare the brushes on their ability to successfully detangle both wet and dry hair.

Speaking from decades of experience suffering through the hair detangling process, the results do not always justify the means. Just because a brush is capable of detangling our hair, it does not necessarily mean that the experience is an enjoyable one. We knew we needed an honest assessment of the level of pain associated with the detangling process for each hairbrush.

Finally, no fighting with products in an effort to get them to work properly. We tested the ease of use for each of the brushes.

Which Is Better For Detangling Wet Hair?

First up was the wet hair detangling test using the Wet Brush. As we brushed, we could feel that the brush’s bristles were thick and sturdy. This made brushing through the tangles easier and faster.

When we replicated the test using the Tangle Teezer, the process was a lot harder. It felt like it was more difficult to brush our hair thoroughly and brush through every strand. We found that we really had to push/press down to work the brush through all of our hair.

Based on this experience, we suspect the Tangle Teezer may not be a great option for those of us with thick hair, curly hair, or a large amount of hair.

The winner of the wet hair detangling challenge was clear. Wet Brush provided easier, quicker, and more thorough detangling than Tangle Teezer. Since it is a full size brush, it is also better suited to those of us with more hair or thicker hair.

Which Is Better For Detangling Dry Hair?

We conducted the detangling test again, this time with dry hair. As with the wet hair test, the Wet Brush quickly and easily removed our tangles.

This time, the Tangle Teezer also did the job, but it felt like it took longer to brush & detangle our hair than it did using the Wet Brush.

Which Is Less Painful?

As we were putting the hair brushes through both our wet and dry detangling tests, we also made sure to pay attention to the levels and causes of pain that we experienced with each brush.

In both tests, we noticed that perceived pain was a result of two factors: the brush tugging on the hair and the bristles digging into the scalp.

The Wet Brush felt like it glided through our hair more gently. The cushioned body absorbed some of the shock and the bristles flexed just the right amount when they encountered a tangle. Our tangles were removed without us feeling too much pulling sensation. We also found ourselves appreciating the padded ball tips on the bristles as this let them glide smoothly over our scalp rather than digging in.

Having to press harder and brush longer with the Tangle Teezer no doubt increased our pain levels. The brush seemed to pull more at our hair and the bristles felt sharper on our scalp than the Wet Brush.

The competition on this test wasn’t even close – Wet Brush came away as the hands down winner for inflicting the least amount of pain.

Ease of Use

Both the Wet Brush and the Tangle Teezer were relatively easy to use. That said, Wet Brush got the win here because of its standard handle and because we didn’t have to press as hard or brush as long to achieve full detangling.

Long Term Update!

After several of our testers have been using these brushes over the past few months, we have a few updates to add to this review! The Wet Brush balls on the end of its comb’s bristles deteriorate over time, and make the brush less effective after several months. Additionally, one of our testers reported that the handle of their Wet Brush broke after 9 months of consistent use. While these long term updates do detract from the Wet Brush in comparison to Tangle Teezer, we still believe that Wet Brush is the best detangling hairbrush even though its long term durability isn’t as great as the Tangle Teezer’s.

How To Prevent Your Hair From Tangling

Moisturize

Dry cuticles are more prone to damage than cuticles that are properly hydrated. Use conditioner regularly and allow it to sit on your hair for the recommended amount of time. Try supplementing with a weekly hair mask treatment for extra hydration.

Minimize heat damage

Heat from blow dryers, curling irons, and flat irons can pull all the moisture back out of your hair and leave the cuticle vulnerable to damage. If you must use these tools, do what you can to limit the amount of time your hair is being exposed to the heat. Towel dry hair prior to using your blow dryer. Look for brands with ceramic, tourmaline, or ionic components which cut down on overall use time.There are also heat protectant sprays that can be used before curling or straightening your hair that help to minimize heat damage.

Minimize chemical damage

Looking to go from jet black to platinum blonde? The chemical process involved has the potential to really do a number on your hair’s health. Talk to your hairstylist first; an expert can help you plan a multi-step transition which will be gentler on your hair than a rapid approach.

Treat wet hair gently

Wet hair is much more delicate than dry because water temporarily breaks down the hydrogen bonds in the hair shaft leaving it weaker and more vulnerable to damage. When towel drying hair, do it gently by squeezing not rubbing.

Use caution when brushing wet hair. Be gentle and only use brushes designed for the task. To minimize brushing of wet tangles, brush tangles out prior to showering, when hair is still dry.

Protect hair while you sleep

Hair ties and bobby pins can cause damage to our hair and stress to our scalp when they are placed in the same position on a regular basis. Try alternating between a high pony, low pony, and braids. If you always pin your hair in a top knot, try a chignon instead. Variation is key.

This manual toothbrush proved to be our favorite to use. It has a very large toothbrush head with several unique features – crisscrossing bristles with rounded rubber bristles on the outside of the head. One last thing to note for this toothbrush is that it has a medium softness rating, so if you have sensitive gums, this may not be the toothbrush for you as it has fairly hard bristles.

For our review, we decided to test and compare the hair removal cream brands Veet and Nair. Both brands have been around for over 50 years and are two of the most popular and commonly known hair removal lotion brands on the market. With repeated reviews of the hair removal lotions working well and being easier than shaving, it’s easy to understand why this form of body hair removal is so popular. Before testing, we first took a look at the ingredient lists of each product and analyzed both the similarities and differences.  All three products had the common ingredients of water, mineral oil, cetearyl alcohol, calcium hydroxide, ceteareth-20, tocopherol, and fragrance. Mineral oil and tocopherol are skin conditioning ingredients that hydrate and nourish the skin. How We Tested

We conducted a number of tests using the products on different areas of the body. We focused on smell, ease of application, which products worked faster and better, and how the skin felt and smelled afterwards. For our tests, we used both a male and female tester and followed each hair remover product’s instructions. We tested Nair on our male tester’s left arm and Veet on our male tester’s right arm. Then for Nair’s Sensitive Formula Hair Remover, we tested on our female tester’s legs and arms. Continue reading to see which hair removers performed best!

Smell

For our smell test, we focused on how strong the scents were and what they smelled like. During application, we found that each product smelled very similar and all had a chemical like smell. We found that while it was noticeable, it was still tolerable and overall relatively mild. Because they were all so similar in smell, the smell test ended in a tie.

Ease of Application

For our application test, we focused on which hair removers applied the easiest, quickest, and caused the least mess. When applying Nair, we used our hands and while this was easy and simple, we found that it was a little messy. Veet, on the other hand, comes with a plastic spatula which allows you to coat the hair more evenly. Nair Sensitive Formula also includes the hair removal tool of a dual sided sponge to help with application and removal. Both the spatula and sponge allowed for easier, faster, and more even application of product versus using your hand which we found to be messier and not as even. Because of this, Veet’s and Nair Sensitive Formula’s application tools made for a tie in our application test.

Hair Removal

With hair removal being the most important criteria, we tested each to see which product removed hair the best. On the left arm, Nair did not come with any sort of tool to remove the lotion so we used a washcloth to remove the lotion and hair. Nair left the applied area of the arm feeling soft, smooth, and moisturized with hardly any stubble or hair remaining. On the right arm, Veet (which comes with a plastic spatula for application and removal) left the applied area also feeling soft, smooth, and  moisturized; however, you could still see a few more hairs on the area where the hair remover was applied and more stubble for the hair that was removed. And lastly Nair Sensitive Formula (which comes with a dual sided sponge) had just about the same results as Veet.

While we appreciated the spatula and sponge that came with Veet and Nair Sensitive Formula because it allowed for easier removal and clean up, Nair ultimately removed hair the best between the three. And with that, Nair is the winner for best hair removal!

Speed

Combining application, wait, and removal/clean up time, each hair remover differed and was based off a single area application. Each of the wait times was the minimum time instructed for each product. You are able to leave the product on longer if needed, but it should never exceed ten minutes on the skin. For the male tester’s left arm, Nair took about 5 minutes total, broken down by a 1 minute application time, 3 minute wait time, and 1-2 minute removal/clean up time. For the male tester’s right arm, Veet took around 8 minutes total, broken down by a 1 minute application time, 5 minute wait time, and 1-2 minute removal/clean up time. On our female tester’s arm and leg, Nair Sensitive Formula took around 7-8 minutes as well with a 1 minute application time, 4 minute wait time, and 2 minute removal/clean up time. Although the Nair Sensitive Formula took around 7-8 minutes, part of the process includes going in the shower, which made the overall process feel longer than the others.

While the difference in time was only by a few minutes, Nair was the clear winner here because it had the shortest time of all the hair removers.

Feel Afterwards

After removing the lotion and rinsing the skin thoroughly of all the product, each product left the skin feeling soft and smooth. However, of the three hair removal lotions, Nair was the softest and smoothest of them all. Veet and Nair Sensitive Formula left behind a few hairs and some light/minor stubble, and while not a huge difference, it was still noticeable when compared to Nair. Because of this, Nair is the winner for leaving the skin feeling the best after application and removal.

After Smell

Aside from how the skin felt after removing/rinsing the product from the skin, we also wanted to test for how long the smell lingered after. We found that for Nair, the chemical like smell lingered for a couple hours after. Although the smell wasn’t too bothersome, when compared to Veet and Nair Sensitive Formula, Nair did not perform as well. Both Veet and Nair Sensitive Formula had fresher and milder scents that did not last long at all. So for this test, Nair was the loser and Veet and Nair Sensitive Formula tied.

Overall, based on price and testing, we declared Nair as the winner for the best hair removal cream! Compared to Veet and Nair Sensitive Formula, Nair is the best deal between the three. Although you have to buy it in a pack of 3, it comes out to about $5 per bottle whereas Veet costs about $9 and Nair Sensitive Formula costs about $15 for 1 bottle. Not only are you getting the best bang for your buck, but Nair also removes hair the best between the three. After testing, the skin was left feeling the smoothest and with no hairs or stubble left behind. Tips For Applying Hair Removal Cream

Do a Patch Test

Make sure to test a small patch of skin and wait 24 hours to see if your skin has any sort of reaction. If it does not, continue on!

Examine Skin

Take a look at your skin to see that there are no cuts, rashes, etc. to avoid any other reactions to the skin.

Apply to Dry Skin

Most hair removal creams require you to apply to dry skin, so make sure your skin is not wet and is free of any other lotions, creams, or oils to avoid any interference with the hair removal cream.

Don’t Rub It In

You will want to apply the hair removal lotion as evenly as possible to avoid patchiness. Spread a thick layer onto the skin and do not rub in. You can use a spatula or some kind of tool to help with this. If none are available, use your palm instead of your fingers for application.

Wash Hands & Skin Thoroughly After

Final Thoughts

Regardless of what brand you use, you can’t go wrong with either of these three options as they have all proven to remove body hair quickly and successfully. These hair removal creams/lotions are practical and affordable options that are easy, fast, and effective and can be done in the comfort of your home. They are also inexpensive compared to other forms of hair removal such as waxing or laser hair removal. To us, hair removal creams are the way to go!

With the multitude of cleansing devices on the market, some being fairly inexpensive and some with hefty price tags, it’s difficult to know which device to pick, especially when you don’t know how well it will work for your skin type. So we compared two of the most popular facial cleansing brush brands: Clarisonic and Foreo. Both of these items can be found all over the internet and on social media. First Impressions

Clarisonic

Our first impression of the Clarisonic Mia 2 was that the brush has an easy to hold handle that allows for easy control as you move the cleansing brush around your face. The size of the brush itself was the perfect size… not too big or too small to hold and/or store away when not in use. By the look of the brush, you might think it would be somewhat heavy to hold while washing your face; however, we found that it was lightweight and manageable.

It’s hard to ignore the accessories that Clarisonic includes in their package. The travel case that is provided for the Clarisonic Mia 2 is convenient not only for travel, but for storage as well. This case helps keep the brush separate from other toiletries and things in your bathroom and keeps the brush clean! The Mia 2 also includes a travel size facial cleanser.

Foreo

The Foreo Luna 2 (for sensitive skin model) was also easy to hold, but did not feature a handle. The brush is small enough to fit in the palm of your hands or can be easily held by your fingertips. It is small, lightweight, compact, and perfect for travel. The most interesting and unique part about this cleansing brush was its dual surfaces. One side with a series of bumps/ridges for cleansing the skin and the other side completely smooth for massaging the skin.

The Foreo has a flat base that allows the brush to stand up when stored and not in use. This is great for your home, but not extremely useful when traveling. Although the Foreo silicone bristles are said to be anti-microbial, it might still be nice to include a sturdy travel case for the brush, versus the small pouch that it comes with.

Specifications and Features

How We Tested

After reviewing the specifications and features of the two brushes, it would seem at first glance that the Clarisonic Mia 2 might give you a little bit more bang for your buck because of all the accessories included. However, performance is obviously the most important aspect in deciding which brush to purchase, so we put both brushes to the test and here’s how we felt about them. To test, we had our team use the Clarisonic once a day, everyday for two weeks, and then use the Foreo everyday for the following two weeks. We were sure to take notice of how easy each brush was to use/navigate around our faces, how our skin felt during the cleansing process, and how it felt after cleansing.

Clarisonic

The Clarisonic Mia 2 was overall easy to navigate around the entire face including around the nose, which can sometimes be hard to get to. Even with the delicate setting and applying little to no pressure on the face, and just letting the brush do the work, the Mia 2 still felt slightly rough and abrasive. Once we were done cleansing the skin, although the skin felt clean, the skin felt pretty dried out, raw, and sensitive afterwards.

In addition, when testing the speed settings of the brush, the difference in speeds was difficult to detect. There was little to no difference in our testing, which leaves little flexibility when using this brush. The caveat to this is that the Clarisonic Mia 2 does offer multiple different brush heads if the one that comes with purchase is not suitable for your skin, so you may be able to get a softer brush head that is less abrasive.

Foreo

As for the Foreo Luna 2, it was pretty easy to navigate around the entire face as well, but was slightly tougher to cleanse around the nose due to the surface of the brush being larger than the Clarisonic. During cleansing, the skin felt very massaged and it was a thoroughly enjoyable process. After cleansing, the skin still felt very smooth, soft, and not dried out. The only downside of this brush is that it definitely doesn’t feel like it gives as deep of a clean as Clarisonic, probably due to the softer and less abrasive surface.

As for the settings for this brush, it was very easy to tell the difference between the intensity between each mode. Having the multiple options for speeds/intensities is a benefit especially on the days when you may not need a super deep clean or on the the days that you do.

How To Use Facial Cleansing Brushes

Wet face with warm water, apply cleanser to face or brush (your preference), wet brush slightly, then wash! Both brushes only need to be used for one minute each. Don’t worry about getting either cleansing brush wet, as they are both waterproof!

Clarisonic

With only two buttons on the device itself, the Clarisonic Mia 2 is simple and easy to use. First press the power button at the bottom. Once you have done so, you press the button above it with the two arrows with the choice of the delicate setting (low) or the daily setting (normal). The speed is indicated by the upper light which is the normal speed or the lower light which is the low speed.

For charging, the Mia 2 needs about 18 hours to fully charge and gives about 24 minutes of use. So if you are using it once everyday you will need to charge your Mia about once a month or if you are using it twice a day you will need to charge it about twice a month.

Foreo

Similar to the Mia 2, the Foreo Luna 2 only has a few buttons in order to use. First, press the middle button to turn on. Once you have done so, press either the “-” or the “+” button to choose your desired speed/intensity. While there are no lights indicating the speed settings, it is easy to distinguish between each mode. The brush will let you know when the minute is up. Once you are finished washing your face, dry your face, then press the center button again and flip brush to the massage side and massage skin for another minute.

For charging, the Luna 2 only needs one hour of charge maximum and will last for over 7 months before you need to charge again.

The Best Facial Cleansing Brush

After testing both facial cleansing brushes, we decided that the Foreo Luna 2 is the best facial cleansing brush between the two. While the Clarisonic Mia 2 has a little more to offer at a better price, when it came down to how the brushes actually performed, the Foreo Luna 2 came out on top. We found ourselves looking forward to the Foreo cleansing process that doubles as a relaxing face massage. This facial brush seems to be suitable for more skin types because the silicone bristles were less abrasive than the Clarisonic Mia 2 brush head, and the modulation of intensity was far greater than Clarisonic’s two speeds. If you have sensitive skin, the Foreo Luna 2 is the better choice for you!

Helpful Skin Cleansing Hints and Tips

Beautiful Skin Starts Within!

Make sure to drink lots of water, get plenty of sleep, and try to stay away from fried food, sugar, too much salt.

Wipe Away Existing Makeup

Before using any facial device, make sure to remove your makeup PRIOR to washing your face. You can use makeup wipes, cleansing oils/washes, but it is important to remove the makeup BEFORE washing your face so that you can really clean your skin and not have a layer of makeup between.

Keep Things Clean

If you choose to purchase the Clarisonic, make sure to clean your brush head so that you are not cleaning with a dirty brush head that is maybe holding dirt, bacteria, debris, etc.

Final Thoughts

We can see how both of these facial cleansing brushes get rave reviews. We thoroughly enjoyed testing both, however we found that we were consistently more excited to put the Foreo Luna 2 against our face than the Clarisonic Mia 2. Despite our clear winner, we don’t think you can go wrong with purchasing either facial cleansing brush. Both products are a great way to take your skin care to the next level with some great deep cleaning.

When comparing the pricing between Aquaphor vs Vaseline, there is a somewhat large price difference. For about the same size container (13 oz.), Aquaphor will cost about $14 and Vaseline will cost about $5. Pricing will vary depending on where you shop. The reason for this appears to be the difference in ingredients that are used in each product. So is Aquaphor worth the higher cost? That’s what we’re here to tell you.

How We Tested

Aquaphor: 41% Petrolatum, Mineral Oil, Ceresin, Lanolin Alcohol, Panthenol, Glycerin, and Bisabolol

Vaseline: 100% Pure White Petrolatum (triple purified formula)

The first question you may be wondering is what the heck is petrolatum? Petrolatum is a semi-solid mixture of hydrocarbons that comes from petroleum. Petroleum is a naturally occurring liquid that exists in our earth’s surface and is mined for a number of reasons, including but not limited to: gasoline, asphalt and chemical reagents used to manufacture plastic and pharmaceuticals, as well as Aquaphor and Vaseline!

Aquaphor has a few more ingredients in its ointment, Mineral oil is derived from Petroleum and provides a hydrating layer when it is at a cosmetic grade. It is known not to clog pores and is added to many cosmetic products. Ceresin is similar to bee’s wax in that it’s often added to cosmetics to harden them. Lanolin Alcohol is a safe fatty alcohol that is commonly used to prevent moisture loss. Panthenol is also known as vitamin B-5 which helps build a barrier to prevent water loss and protect against irritants. Glycerin acts as a sponge by attracting water, making it an incredibly great moisturiser. Lastly, Bisabolol soothes skin inflammation with proven anti-inflammatory properties.

After discussing these ingredients, you can see that while these products are used the same, Aquaphor has a lot more to offer in regards to elements of their product. Aquaphor offers versatility, yet with a longer ingredient list, there is an opportunity for irritants or allergic reactions. With that being said, Vaseline only contains petrolatum which quite simply acts as a barrier on the skin… that is it. It does not moisturise itself, instead it retains the moisture when applied topically to the skin with the moisture that already exists, while Aquaphor contains ingredients to promote moisturized skin.

Consistency and Texture

Comparing the consistency and texture of both the healing ointments, we wanted to see if one was thicker, which makes it easier to apply to skin. Through a few blind tests, our participants concluded that they couldn’t tell a difference in consistency and texture between Aquaphor and Vaseline.

Effectiveness

To test effectiveness we applied Vaseline to our right hand and the right sole of our foot for seven nights, and Aquaphor on the left hand and foot. These formulas have a greasy and emollient texture. For that reason, we wore socks and gloves after application overnight. At the end of the seven days, our feet and hands were extremely hydrated and soft.

The result, both Aquaphor and Vaseline delivered results as promised, with an indistinguishable difference from left vs the right. Upon application, the products look and feel almost identical, with Aquaphor having a slightly smoother application, likely due to the added ingredients. For this reason, we favored Aquaphor, since it laid over the surface of the skin evenly and felt a bit more like lotion while the Vaseline remained sticky.

In addition, we used Vaseline and Aquaphor on our lips for five days each, with a two day break in between. Aquaphor had a noticeable creamer texture when warmed up on the lips in comparison to Vaseline. This may be a result of the added mineral oil ingredient we see in Aquaphor vs Vaseline. As for longevity, both formulas stayed on our lips well, staying rather sticky until needing reapplication.

Both formulas were extremely effective in moisturizing, in a harsh free, and simple manner. Although these products are may seem basic, they provide exceptional moisturizing properties, perform well and do exactly what they claim.

The Best Ointment

We tend to reach for healing ointments when we are in need of a quick fix for that scrape on your knee, those chapped lips, or even super dry skin. Dermatologists agree that antibiotic ointments such as Neosporin are known to cause irritant or contact dermatitis, and the best fix is that plain restoring balm such as Aquaphor or Vaseline.

Aquaphor offers more versatility, and is recommended by dermatologists as a healing ointment with better benefits than Vaseline. For this reason, we’ve decided that Aquaphor is the best ointment you can buy despite its higher price point. But if you are worried about irritants or allergic reactions to some of the additional ingredients in Aquaphor, Vaseline is a good alternative.

Ways to Use Both Aquaphor and Vaseline

Moisturize Dry Skin

These products can be applied topically to dry, cracked, or irritated skin or lips to lock in moisture. Apply a thin layer of ointment to affected areas, and repeat as needed.

Also, both Aquaphor and Vaseline can be used in replacement to lotion by rubbing on dry areas of the body, such as the feet or hands; we recommend covering with gloves or socks to reduce transferring of the product.

Promote Rapid Healing

These ointments can be applied to minor cuts or over recent stitches and covered with a bandage to promote rapid healing.

Replacement for Chapstick

Chapsticks are commonly swapped out for these balms due to the balms’ longevity.

Final Thoughts

While tanning outside may be free, it comes with the huge risk of skin cancer, especially with prolonged periods of sunbathing on the regular. And we don’t even need to discuss tanning beds, $15 dollars to increase your risk of melanoma (the deadliest form of skin cancer) by 59% according to the American Academy of Dermatology. St. Tropez cost $44.00 for 6.57oz and Loving Tan $43.00 for 6.4oz. If these products are used on a consistent basis meaning reapplied every 10 days, these tanners cost around $2.50 per use. A fraction of the price compared to the alternative forms of tanning. Loving Tan comes in just slightly cheaper than St. Tropez to win the price battle.

How We Tested

Loving Tan and St. Tropez both produce an ideal summer glow, with an ideal olive color payoff. We broke down the elements of these tanners to determine the best express self tanning mousse on the market. On the left leg, we used Loving Tan mousse and left the product on for two hours before rinsing in the shower. On the right leg, we applied the St. Tropez mousse at the same time as Loving Tan, but rinsed the right leg after three hours instead. The first photo is taken before application, and the second photo is after application of both tans, and after developing over night, approximately 8 hours after the first rinse in the shower.

Scent/Smell

The thing to know about self Tanners are that they have a very distinct smell. While smell is not an issue for some, others have difficulty tolerating a strong scent. St. Tropez has added a strong floral scent to cover up the typical tanning smell. For this reason we gave to win to Loving Tan for not adding any extra fluff to an already strong scented product.

Blendability & Ease of application

Blendability is extremely important for a perfect application. St. Tropez’s medium brown colored formula was a lighter in color compared to Loving Tans very dark formula. Loving Tans dark formula took more effort to diffuse an even color on the skin. The win in this category went to St. Tropez due to the ease of blendability.

Loving Tan: Dark brown/black upon application, due to this a bit more difficult to blend in.

St. Tropez: Medium brown, easier to blend. More foamy.

Color Payoff

This category was a bit difficult to judge. We found that both of these formulas had very similar end color payoffs. Loving Tans formula being darker in color showed am immediately darker color until it was rinsed off in the shower. Although difficult to see in pictures, Loving Tan offered a slightly darker, and more olive end tan. For this reason we gave the W to Loving Tan, by a hair.

Lasting time

After having both Loving Tan and St. Tropez applied for five days, we reevaluated the lasting power of both formulas. Both looked the fairly similar when comparing over different types of lighting. With that being said, the lasting time is a tie!

The breakdown in cost is pretty plain and simple, you get more product for your money with St. Tropez. They take the pretty obvious win in this category.

Self Tanner Tips

Get to Work in the Shower by Shaving and Exfoliating!

While Loving Tan and St. Tropez do not explicitly recommend shaving, we found from customer reviews it makes for the smoothest canvas.

Exfoliating is an important step to the process, this removes the dead skin cells and helps avoid a patchy application. For exfoliator we used a DIY coffee grounds and sugar scrub mixed with a bit of coconut oil, but use what works for you!

While there are a ton of exfoliants on the market, you most likely have something in your kitchen to whip one up. St. Tropez recommends this step to be done 24 hrs prior to use, while Loving Tan simply states to exfoliate before application.

Moisturize

This step is vital before application. Both Loving Tan and St. Tropez recommend applying moisturizer to dry areas like your hands, feet, ankles, wrists, knees and elbows. We used CeraVe moisturizing cream over the entire body and waited 30 minutes before the tanning mousse application.

Pop your Tanning Mit On and Start Applying

Loving tan recommends you apply mousse directly to body, and buff into skin using circular motions. St. Tropez recommends long sweeping motions for applications. We found a combination of long sweeping motions and circular motions apply the products best. Some assistance may be required when applying to the middle of your back.

Let it Sit

Once tanner is applied, both Loving Tan and St. Tropez recommend you wait until product is dry, about 60 seconds before getting dressed.

Shower!

Loving Tan and St. Tropez require you to shower a few hours after applying the product. Loving Tan requires 2 hours while St. Tropez requires a 3 hour (for dark color payoff).

Wait for Your Tan to Develop

After you shower off the excess product, its recommended to avoid perspiration or submerging body in water during the time it takes for the tan to develop. Loving Tan takes 6 hours to develop and St. Tropez 8 hours. After the tan has developed, your bronzed skin should be glowing from anywhere between 5 – 10 days. Both Loving Tan and St. Tropez recommend you moisturize, exfoliate regularly and reapply when desired to maintain the most even tan.

Final Thoughts

If you are a beginner we recommend St. Tropez over Loving tan for a number of reasons. The overall cost along with the ingredient list and option of color payoff makes St. Tropez the ideal sunless tanner. St. Tropez sent has a very apparent floral perfume added to the product, but if scent is not an issue we love everything else about this product. Loving tan has a shorter leave on and development time in comparison to St. Tropez, but in the end both of these products get the job done.
