Best Items for Hiking in Hot Weather

Hiking on a sunny day is a treat, especially in areas like Southern California with its collective beauty of nature and breathtaking cityscapes. Southern California and other places like Arizona experience many sunny days every year, so you can be certain that most days out on the trail will be a warm one. Keep in mind that sunny weather in can bring temperatures up to 100˚+. With heat waves in mind, hiking in hot weather takes some preparation and a number of essential items to ensure a safe and enjoyable adventure. To help you on your next hot weather hike, we have compiled a list of the best items to bring with you.

Water

This may seem like a no-brainer, but one of the most common hiking injuries comes from dehydration. Making sure you have a bottle to store your cool water is the most important item to bring with you on your next sun filled hike.

Hydrate prior to your hike and top off your water container right before you start. Bring with you about 2 liters minimum, and expect to bring more if the hike is extra strenuous.

For something with flavor and additional electrolytes, also bring a sports drink. Hiking around in the sun will make you lose more electrolytes due to the extra sweating. A sports drink will replenish those electrolytes, but don’t bring it as a substitute for water.

Sun Protection

The sun can do some damage to your skin, which means taking proper measures to fight UV rays is ideal. Prolonged exposure to the sun can cause sunburn, chapped lips, and skin cancer. The best way to protect from the sun are sunglasses, light colored clothing, sunscreen, and a brimmed hat. We recommend sunscreen that is 30 SPF and lip balm with SPF protection as well.

Snacks

Snacks are a great way to refuel during your hot weather hike. Packing trail mix, a sandwich, or jerky can improve any hiking experience and keep you moving. One of the best feelings is reaching the peak of your hike and biting into a delicious sandwich!

Map or Directions

Although most hikes are pretty straightforward to follow, it is smart to take along a map. Most of our phones today have access to online map systems. Bring your smartphone or paper map with you on your hike to stay on trail with confidence.

Bring a backpack or a hip pack with you when you go hiking. The pack you choose to bring will allow you to carry any sun protection, water, or snacks you decide to bring with you. Hot Weather Clothing

We don’t mean wear a swimsuit… there are different types of clothing that will keep you the coolest on a hot sunny day. Also, wearing breathable and loose clothing will help you stay cool, since your body will regulate better with the help of the air that can pass through.

SPF rated clothing can be purchased, although it may be over the top. Socks are often an overlooked hiking item, but is one of the most important. Choosing a wool or synthetic blend fitted sock will help prevent blisters and keep your feet comfortable, which is the two important things you need to hike.

A hat and a bandanna are articles of clothing you shouldn’t forget. Both will create necessary shade for your body and can be dunked in water to keep your head cool.

Cell Phone

Being out in nature means being able to tune out any distractions from everyday life, especially the smartphones we use on a daily basis. Despite this, having your cell phone on you is essential for your safety. You can use it to reference maps, as a flashlight if you stay out on the trail late, or to call for help.

Be sure to charge your device before your hike so you can have access to it in any given situation. But opt to silence it or even turn it off, that way you can enjoy what hiking is all about!

The Best Basketball Dribbling Drills

Anyone who plays basketball knows that ball handling is an extremely important aspect of the game. Unfortunately, it also has proven to be the most difficult part of the game to master. That is why we compiled a list of the 50 best dribbling drills designed to improve your ball handling. One Basketball Stationary Dribbling Drills

1. No dribble around the backs

Without dribbling, continually move the basketball in a circle around your body by transferring the ball from one hand to another in front of your body and then behind your body at waist height. Perform this for 30 seconds, then switch directions.

2. No dribble around around the legs

Perform the same around the back movement as the previous drill, only this time do it at knee level. Perform for 30 seconds, then switch directions.

3. No dribble around each leg (both ways)

Put one leg about 1.5x shoulder width in front of the other. Then move the basketball around the front leg only for 15 seconds each direction. Then switch legs.

4. Low and wide crossover dribble

Bend your knees, and with feet approximately 1.5x shoulder width apart, crossover the basketball in front of you low and wide. Make to to not let the ball ever go above your waist. Do 30 total crossovers.

5. Between the legs dribble

Put one leg about 1.5x shoulder width in front of the other and bend your knees. Dribble the ball between your legs without letting the ball go above your waist. Perform 30 between the legs, and then switch legs.

6. Behind the back low and wide crossover dribble

Stand with your feet about 1.5x shoulder width apart and bend your knees. Dribble the ball behind your back low and wide, crossing it over from hand to hand. Make sure that the ball does not go above your waist. Perform 30 behind the back crossovers.

7. Low dribble around single leg one hand

Stand with one foot in front of the other about 1.5x shoulder width. With only one hand, dribble low and fast dribbles around your lead leg, never letting the ball go above your knee. Do 10 circles each direction, then switch lead legs.

8. Low dribble figure eights

Stand with your feet about 1.5x shoulder width apart and bend your knees. Using low and rapid dribbles, dribble the ball in a figure eight motion around your legs. Do 10 complete figure eights and then switch directions.

9. Single hand front v-dribbles

Dribble the ball with your right hand only from side to side in front of you. Keep the ball below your waist at all times. Perform 20 crossovers, then switch to your left hand.

10. Single hand in and outs

With your right hand only, dribble the ball on your right side, then perform an in and out to keep the ball on your right side. Keep the ball below your waist at all times. Perform 20 in and outs, then switch to your left hand.

11. Single hand front to back v-dribbles

Dribble the ball back and forth (front to back) on your right side and using only your right hand. Keep the ball below your waist and perform 20 v-dribbles, then switch hands.

12. Wrap around the back dribble

Stand with your feet about 1.5x shoulder width apart and bend your knees. Dribble the ball once on your right side, then wrap the ball around your back to your left hand. Then dribble once on your left side then wrap the ball around your back to your right hand. Be sure to keep the ball below your waist at all times. The around the back dribble should be a wrap around dribble, not a behind the back crossover. Perform 30 total wrap arounds.

13. Hard dribble knee height

Standing with feet about 1.5x shoulder width apart and knees bent, dribble the ball as hard as you can (while still keeping control) at knee height. Perform 30 dribbles with your right hand, then switch to your left hand.

14. Hard dribble waist height

Standing with feet about 1.5x shoulder width apart and knees bent, dribble the ball as hard as you can (while still keeping control) at waist height. Perform 30 dribbles with your right hand, then switch to your left hand.

15. Hard dribble shoulder height

Standing with feet about 1.5x shoulder width apart and knees bent, dribble the ball as hard as you can (while still keeping control) at shoulder height. Be sure to keep your hand on top of the ball at all times (ie do not carry the ball). Perform 30 dribbles with your right hand, then switch to your left hand.

16. 3 dribbles crossover

Standing with feet about 1.5x shoulder width apart and knees bent, dribble the ball 3 times on your right side and then crossover to your left hand, where you will do the same thing. Be sure to dribble the ball hard and low, keeping the ball below your waist at all times. Perform 30 total crossovers.

17. 3 dribbles between the legs

Standing with one foot in front of the other about 1.5x shoulder width apart and knees bent, dribble the ball 3 times on your right side and then crossover between your legs to your left hand, where you will do the same thing. Be sure to dribble the ball hard and low, keeping the ball below your waist at all times. Perform 15 total crossovers, then switch lead legs.

18. 3 dribbles behind the back

Standing with feet about 1.5x shoulder width apart and knees bent, dribble the ball 3 times on your right side and then crossover behind your back to your left hand, where you will do the same thing. Be sure to dribble the ball hard and low, keeping the ball below your waist at all times. Perform 30 total behind the back crossovers.

Standing with feet 1.5x shoulder width apart and knees bent, dribble each ball on the side of your body hard and low at knee level. Perform for 30 seconds.

20. Hard dribbles waist height

Standing with feet 1.5x shoulder width apart and knees bent, dribble each ball on the side of your body hard at waist level. Perform for 30 seconds.

21. Hard dribbles shoulder height

Standing with feet 1.5x shoulder width apart and knees bent, dribble each ball on the side of your body hard at shoulder level. Be sure to keep your hand on top of the ball at all times. Perform for 30 seconds.

22. Front v-dribbles (windshield wipers)

Standing with feet 1.5x shoulder width apart and knees bent, dribble the balls in front of you side to side, keeping the same ball in the same hand. The balls should always be bouncing in sync and going the same direction, like windshield wipers. Be sure to keep the ball below your waist at all times. Perform this for 30 seconds.

23. Side v-dribbles

Standing with feet 1.5x shoulder width apart and knees bent, dribble the balls at your sides moving them from front to back, keeping the same ball in the same hand. The balls should always be bouncing in sync and going the same direction. Be sure to keep the ball below your waist at all times. Perform this for 30 seconds.

24. One high one low dribble

Standing with feet 1.5x shoulder width apart and knees bent, dribble the balls at your sides, one hand dribbling knee height while the other dribbling at least waist height. Perform for 30 seconds then switch.

25. Crossover in front and in back circles (both ways)

Standing with feet 1.5x shoulder width apart and knees bent, crossover one ball in front of you and one ball behind you continuously. Do this for 30 seconds and then switch directions.

26. One hand regular dribble, the other circles around one leg (both ways)

Standing with feet 1.5x shoulder width apart and knees bent, dribble one ball hard and at knee height, while you use the other hand to dribble the other ball in circles around that leg. Do this for 30 seconds, then switch directions of the circles. Then switch which hand is dribbling in circles.

27. 3 dribbles crossover

Standing with feet 1.5x shoulder width apart and knees bent, dribble each ball at waist height 3 times, then with one ball crossover low in front of you while transferring the other ball to your hand that crossed over. Perform 15 crossovers, then switch which hand is crossing over.

28. 3 dribbles between the legs

Standing with feet 1.5x shoulder width apart, one leg in front of the other, dribble each ball at waist height 3 times. Then with one ball crossover between your legs (left to right crossover if your right leg is the lead leg and vise versa for left leg as lead leg) while transferring the other ball to the hand that just performed the crossover. Perform 15 crossovers, then switch lead legs.

29. Circles

Standing with feet 1.5x shoulder width apart and knees bent, dribble each ball low at knee height in a circle around each of your legs. Do 15 circles, then switch directions.

Dribble 3 times while running at an angled direction and then perform a hard and low crossover to completely switch the direction you’re running. Do this the full length of a court and then back.

31. 3 dribbles between the legs

Dribble 3 times while running at an angled direction and then perform a hard and low crossover between the legs to completely switch the direction you’re running. Do this the full length of a court and then back.

32. 3 dribbles behind the back (non wrap around)

Dribble 3 times while running at an angled direction and then perform a hard and low crossover behind the back to completely switch the direction you’re running. This crossover behind the back should not be a wrap around. Do this the full length of a court and then back.

33. 3 dribbles behind the back (wrap around)

Dribble 3 times while running at an angled direction and then perform an around the back wrap around to completely switch the direction you’re running. Do this the full length of a court and then back.

34. 3 dribbles in and out

Dribble 3 times while running straight and then perform a single hand in and out along with a hesitation before. Do this the full length of a court and then back.

35. 3 dribbles spin

Dribble 3 times while running at an angled direction and then perform a spin move to completely switch the direction you’re running. Do this the full length of a court and then back.

36. 3 dribbles in and out crossover

Dribble 3 times while running at an angled direction and then hesitate, do an in and out, and then a crossover hard and low to completely switch the direction you’re running. Do this the full length of a court and then back.

37. 3 dribbles crossover in and out

Dribble 3 times while running at an angled direction and then perform a hard and low crossover to completely switch the direction you’re running, followed by an in and out. Do this the full length of a court and then back.

38. 3 dribbles in and out around the back (wrap around)

Dribble 3 times while running at an angled direction and then hesitate, do an in and out, and then an around the back wrap around to completely switch the direction you’re running. Do this the full length of a court and then back.

39. 3 dribbles, crossover, crossover between the legs spin

Dribble 3 times while running at an angled direction, then perform a crossover followed by a between the legs crossover, followed immediately by a spin to completely switch the direction you’re running. Do this the full length of a court and then back.

40. 3 dribbles in and out spin

Dribble 3 times while running at an angled direction and then hesitate, then do an in and out, followed immediately by a spin to completely switch the direction you’re running. Do this the full length of a court and then back.

41. 3 crossovers gauntlet

Set up cones staggered in a zig zag direction up and down the court, separated by about 10 feet. Dribble to each cone as fast as you can, then perform 3 quick crossovers at the cone, then run to the next cone and do the same thing. Do this the full length of a court and then back.

42. 3 between legs gauntlet

Set up cones staggered in a zig zag direction up and down the court, separated by about 10 feet. Dribble to each cone as fast as you can, then perform 3 quick between the legs crossovers at the cone, then run to the next cone and do the same thing. Do this the full length of a court and then back.
