How Liquid-Plumr Works

Clorox’s Liquid-Plumr has two main ingredients: sodium hydroxide (lye) and sodium hypochlorite (bleach). On their own though, these two chemicals can’t clear a sink; they need water. When water is added to the mixture, a chemical reaction occurs. The sodium hydroxide generates heat and becomes corrosive, meaning it can break down other matter. This is great news for you and your clogged pipes. As the corrosive liquid slides down your pipes, it helps to disintegrate whatever organic materials it comes into contact with; be it food, grease buildup, or other unpleasant unmentionables. The bleach helps to tackle tougher things like hair and makeup.

Other ingredients found in Liquid-Plumr help to cut down on foam and encourage the chemical reaction. The addition of Pipe Guard coating protects pipes while the thick gel clears the drain and flushes out debris.

When it’s all said and done, the ingredients in Liquid-Plumr break down rapidly, stopping the chemical reaction. This is so that no damage occurs to your septic system, like a degradation of the helpful bacteria found there that break down waste.

Overview of Drano

We’ve covered that Drano was already available when Liquid-Plumr arrived in 1969, however, it looked a bit different than the product we are used to using today. Drano started as crystals in the early 1920s. In 1965 Bristol-Myers acquired the Drano company until 1992 when it was sold to S.C. Johnson.

Drano crystals are still available today, but there is also a gel version of Drano. The gel/liquid version tends to be the most popular and was a direct result of Clorox’s introduction of Liquid-Plumr. There are other types of Drano too. How Drano Works

Drano may have a few more ingredients, but it works much the same. The primary compounds found in Drano are sodium hydroxide (lye) and sodium hypochlorite (bleach), sodium silicate, and aluminum. The lye, when mixed with the aluminum becomes very caustic, reaching near-boiling temperatures. Other compounds perform chemical reactions as well, allowing the gel to break down and dissolve a variety of materials.

The gel goes from a thick, viscous liquid. To a hot, foamy, and corrosive liquid that effortlessly dissolves clogs, allowing the water to wash them away. Drano is extremely potent, hence why it shouldn’t be used on PVC pipes. How We Tested

We decided to test both Drano and Liquid-Plumr in shower/tub drains that were draining much slower than usual. We did not use any other cleaning agent prior to the tests to truly test the effectiveness of the products. The tests were done within the same hour in order to try and keep the elements and settings equal.

To test, we poured the solutions down the drains according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Then, we observed. Finally, we flushed the system with hot water before reviewing the results of how well the Drano and Liquid-Plumr unclogged the drains.

The two specific products we tested were Drano Max Gel and Liquid-Plumr Clog Destroyer Gel.

Of course, where you purchase these products can vary the price. Most box stores, home improvement stores, and even grocery stores carry Drano and Liquid-Plumr. You can also find them at online retailers. To compare the price we decided to use one of the most popular shopping options, Amazon, because it is perhaps the most widely available and accessible to the greatest number of consumers.

On Amazon, Drano Max Gel in an 80oz bottle retails for $8.19, while an 80oz bottle of Liquid-Plumr Clog Destroyer Gel sells for $13.99. Thankfully, each brand tends to be pretty inexpensive so hopefully, price shouldn’t be an issue.

The cost is, of course, dependent upon bottle size, and can range from around $8.00 – $40 per bottle. Liquid-Plumr is generally a bit pricier than Drano. For both products, most bottles provide enough product for several clogs. If you are hoping to save a bit of money, purchasing either product in bulk can be a better deal.

Drain Cleaning Effectiveness

As you may have noticed, both the gel versions of Liquid-Plumr and Drano have very similar chemical formulas. As a result, they have a very comparable consistency and their recommendations for use are almost exact. They both help to clean drains and improve water flow. Liquid-Plumr and Drano are safe for garbage disposals, waste disposals, most pipes (with a few exceptions), and septic tanks. They can be poured through standing water if you have an exceptionally tough clog.

So, how do these very similar products compare in terms of effectiveness?

Liquid-Plumr dissolved the suspected hair and dirt clog and cleared our pipes in under ten minutes. Drano seemed to take a little bit longer at around twenty-four minutes. Both removed the blockage effectively though, and there were no additional issues or clogs noticed three days later.

The Best Drain Cleaner

The consistency of Liquid-Plumr is thinner and a bit easier to work with. Due to its ingredients, it is safe to use after a primary cleaner. We found these characteristics make it fast-acting and able to clear fully clogged drains. The version of Drano we used was less toxic and more eco-friendly. We appreciated that its added ingredients helped protect our pipes against corrosion and that it was less expensive.

That said, for us, Liquid-Plumr clearly came out on top. It cleaned the drain and cleared the clog fast. The thinner consistency of Liquid-Plumr enabled it to move down the drain more rapidly and break down stubborn debris quickly and efficiently. Despite it being a little more expensive, we were impressed with its ability to clear pipes and tackle even the most stubborn of clogs with minimal time and effort.

Tips for Keeping Your Drain Clean

Though these products are wonderful, no one likes a clog and it would be great if you didn’t require them in the first place! Here are a few suggestions for keeping your drain clean and clear.

Keep Coffee Grounds, Food, and Grease Out of The Drain

These things tend to build up and become trapped. Kitchen grease especially is a common culprit of clogs. Don’t wash it down the drain, instead keep it in a small, sealable container for disposal in the trash.

Don’t Abuse Your Garbage Disposal

Try to put the bulk of leftover food in the trash, not in the garbage disposal.

Cover Your Tub and Shower Drains with a Mesh Cover

Thankfully, the smell of both was not overpowering and the test was relatively quick. While Liquid-Plumr was certainly faster, both products turned out to be extremely effective. Each can help you dissolve your drain issue and protect your pipes.

Gain and Tide are two of the biggest named laundry detergent brands. In fact, they are currently the two leading laundry detergents in the United States. Even if you don’t follow consumer trends, it’s easy to recognize that these two brand names are recognized by nearly everyone and known for their excellent quality.

Overview of Gain

Gain is one of the many products produced by Procter and Gamble. It first began appearing in laundry rooms in 1969 when it was advertised as a stain-fighting detergent. While its effectiveness frequently made it one of the top detergents, Gain was able to execute a clean win over its competitors by introducing a scented version in 1979.

From then on, the makers of Gain have been constantly improving and expanding their product offerings, each with their signature fragrance. The most popular Gain laundry items today include liquid detergent, convenient detergent pouches called “flings”, and scent booster beads. Gain has always been a middle-of-the-road priced detergent with top-of-the-line results. It doesn’t have half as many liquid detergent offerings as Tide but has branched out into other cleaning products like fabric softeners, dryer sheets, and even dish detergent. Overview of Tide

You may be surprised to learn that Tide also belongs to the Procter and Gamble family! It was launched in 1946, following its predecessor Dreft detergent. Tide was marketed as a heavy-duty laundry detergent. To add a bit more power to their advertising campaign, Tide was outfitted with a vibrant bullseye design and frequently seen in daytime soap operas; which the company sponsored.

Tide’s image hasn’t changed much, but its formula has experienced a few modifications. In the late 1960s they added stain-fighting enzymes, and in the 1970s oxygen bleach was mixed in to whiten and brighten clothes. The brand has regularly partnered with other products like Clorox, Febreeze, and Dawn to improve their effectiveness and fragrance. You can now find Tide on store shelves nearly everywhere as either a liquid detergent, the fan-favorite Tide Pods, or as scent boosting beads.

We love that Tide tends to formulate its products to specific cleaning needs and concerns. For example, Tide Plus Febreze Sport Odor Defense targets sweat odors and stains commonly found on gym clothes and sports uniforms. Tide Ultra OXI includes pre-treaters that are perfect for removing difficult marks such as grass stains and red wine. They have almost thirty different types of liquid laundry detergent to choose from as well as a handful of other cleaning products.

How We Tested

We rounded up our soiled clothes, complete with ketchup, grease, and dirt stains, and separated them into three types of laundry. Our laundry clothes categories were colors, whites, and delicates. A load from all three categories was washed with each detergent, both Tide and Gain.

We did not use any additional stain-fighting treatments, boosters, or fabric softeners in order to test solely the liquid detergents.

Let’s get right to it! Here is what we found when we dove into the clean clothes basket for a closer look.

Cleaning Effectiveness

After a cycle in the washing machine and dryer, both detergents produced fresh-smelling and clean clothes. Not only was their stain-fighting and washing effectiveness of excellent quality, but the scents were fabulous too!

Upon closer inspection, we found Tide to be superior at removing stains. The grease stain was nowhere to be found, not even a residue remained. The Gain detergent removed most of the grease but left a slight shadow on the spot that was soiled. Both detergents had no problem tackling the dirt and ketchup stains, effortlessly lifting them away.

All in all, washing with Tide and again resulted in clothes that were soft, fresh, and most importantly clean!

Scent

Gain’s signature scent has withstood the test of time and continues to be widely sold. Tide’s original fragrance is the brand’s most popular as well. However, both detergents offer a variety of alternatives.

Other than Gain Original, you can find uplifting smells such as Moonlight Breeze, Island Fresh, White Tea Lavender, and Orange Blossom Vanilla. We were also pleased to see an unscented option for those with sensitivities.

In addition to Tide original, you can wash your clothes with fragrances such as Botanical Rain, Coral Blast, April Fresh, and other brand mashups like Downy Scented. Again, we love that they offer consumers an unscented option.

As most of us know, it’s not just about how amazing the detergent smells in the bottle but how long it lasts after washing. Our tests found that the Tide fragrance lingered the longest.

Personally, we liked the Tide original scent the best and were happy to find that our clothes still smelled fresh days after washing.

Variety

Both detergents have an unscented detergent, which is excellent news for those with sensitivities or who prefer no fragrance.

If you are hoping for a gentler formula to avoid any reactions or issues, Tide may be your best bet. They have a formula specifically tailored to those who need a hypoallergenic detergent with no additives or irritants. It is called Free and Gentle; and while it may cost you a bit more, it is dermatologist approved for those with skin concerns. Tide Simply Free and Sensitive is similar. It has the same powerful cleaning formula and budget-friendly price as Tide Original but does not have any perfumes or dyes. Either of these choices is great for those who would like a “cleaner” detergent.

Gain released their own pared-down version, called Gain Sensitive. It still has perfumes, most commonly produced in a Cherry Blossom fragrance, but has fewer ingredients. It is designed to be free of dyes and formulated with gentler cleaning power. Gain Botanicals, another scented option, is free from dyes, phosphates, and brighteners. Its scents are nature-inspired.

Both brands’ sensitive detergents promise to provide the same effectiveness and stain-fighting properties as their original formulas.

Is Tide or Gain environmentally friendly? Both brands have made recent earth-friendly improvements. Tide PureClean is said to be one of their most natural detergents and is biodegradable. Gain released an Eco-Box of their liquid detergent. It is made of 60% less plastic and the detergent within the box is made using 100% renewable wind-power electricity.

Of course, costs can vary widely based on where you live and where you shop. We did a bit of research and found that on Amazon, a twin pack of 75 fl oz Gain Original bottles sells for $14.82, whereas a 92 fl oz bottle of Tide Original sells for $11.97. If you were to shop these prices the average cost per load comes out to $.15 for Gain and $.19 for Tide.

In general, Tide tends to be slightly more expensive than Gain. However, it depends on where you buy your detergent and what product you purchase.

Pressure-mounted gates don’t require screws, drilling, or hardware. They are easily wedged into place and can be adjusted to fit different spaces. It is simple to move your gate from one area to another.

However, these gates can become loose over time. Additionally, if you don’t get the pressure points tight enough or they become askew the gate may fall out of place. For this reason, they are not recommended for some areas of your home.

Different Styles of Baby Gates

In addition to the two different types, pressure-mounted and hardware-mounted, there are a few different styles of baby gates. The styles have less to do with safety and more to do with preference.

Swing-Through

A swing-through baby gate has a hinge that allows the gate to swing. Either the entire gate can swing or it can have a walk-through door that swings. There are certain safety precautions to take when using a swing-through gate at the top of the stairs, so be sure to read your manual.

Step-Over

A step-over baby gate does not have a door to walk through, nor does it swing to provide an opening. The gate stays in place and the adult must step over the gate. Usually, these gates are lower so that adults can easily get over them.

Why We Chose Hoover and Bissell

The brands we have reviewed are Hoover and Bissell. These brands are the top vacuum brands on the stick vacuum market and both share similar online reviews of around 5 stars. The reviews state that these vacuums are a great quality and value. Multiple reviews also state that they are easy to use and that they work effectively. With that, we decided to test them hands on. We chose hard floor stick vacuums that were under $100 to remain in the “affordable” range category, but also vacuums that were not priced too cheap. The specific stick vacuums we reviewed are the Bissell PowerEdge and the Hoover Linx. Our goal was to find the best hard floor stick vacuum that won’t break the bank….let’s see the results!

Important aspects to note regarding pricing are the costs of vacuum filters. While you can find aftermarket filters, we do recommend buying the brand filters as they have proven to be better quality than their aftermarket counterparts. For Bissell, filters will cost around $10 for a single filter or $15 for a pack of two. For Hoover, filters will cost around $2 for a single filter and the filters are rinsable. This enables you to wash the filter to make it last longer, helping you save money on filter replacements. So although the cost of the Bissell stick vacuum will initially be more affordable, the cost of replacing filters over time will make the Bissell vacuum more expensive.

So with only cost in mind, Hoover is the winner.

How We Tested

Sound

For this vacuum review and comparison, we wanted to test the sound of the vacuums and how loud they got. A feature some may or may not have thought of, but good to know either way! The Hoover reached around 62-64 dB (decibels) on the bare floor mode and around 65-66 dB on carpet mode. The Bissell reached around 68-72 dB on its single cleaning mode. With the Hoover being the quieter of the two stick vacuums, it is the clear winner here.

Vacuuming

Now onto the actual vacuuming. When testing the Hoover Linx, we found that it was easy to push and navigate overall. It has two modes which are Carpet mode and Bare Floor mode and includes a brush on the bottom to pull up debris, like most vacuums. We used both settings to test the Hoover on its ability to pick up debris. Throughout this test, we found that it pushed larger items (trail mix) on the hard floor when on Bare Floor mode, but was able to suction the trail mix up when it was on Carpet mode.

When testing the Bissell PowerEdge, we found that it was difficult to push on carpet, yet a little easier on the hard floor. While the Bissell PowerEdge states it’s made for hard floor cleaning, we still thought it was more difficult than the Hoover Linx. For this test, we used trail mix again to test the ability of the vacuum to suction large item debris and we found that it performed well on hard floors when picking up the trail mix. What differentiates the Bissell in terms of vacuuming versus the Hoover for this comparison is that it has silicone edge pads that pull up debris instead of a brush.

For this test, even though it didn’t perform as well when on Bare Floor mode compared to the Bissell, the Hoover vacuum was still ultimately able to pick up large items. However, in the end, the most important criteria for the vacuuming test was hard floor cleaning ability. Therefore, Bissell is the winner.

Hard to Reach Places

Next, we tested which of these stick vacuums navigated hard to reach places best. For the Bissell, we found that the height of the foot suction part of the vacuum is lower than the Hoover, so it was able to get under the couch during our test. However, we found it difficult to vacuum around baseboards since it does not have a straight edge. It makes vacuuming corners easy; however, this can be done with a straight edge vacuum as well. On the other hand, the Hoover has a flat edge which makes it easy to go up against walls. The foot suction part of it is a little higher than the Bissell so it wasn’t able to navigate as far under the couch. For this test, Hoover is the winner.

Cleanability

For our cleanability test, we found that the Hoover was easier to clean as everything is located in the one container you need to remove. The only difficult part was having to unscrew the brush and cleaning out hair that was caught in the brush. The Bissell, on the other hand, has multiple parts to remove from the vacuum itself, instead of the single contained unit (filters, debris container) of the Hoover. But it doesn’t have a brush so you don’t have to worry about cleaning that. Ultimately, the final decision for this test came out to a tie.

The Best Affordable Hard Floor Stick Vacuum

After all our different tests, we declared the Bissell PowerEdge as our winner for best affordable hard floor stick vacuum! While one of the downsides of the Bissell was that its v-shaped mouth made it difficult to vacuum near baseboards, we found that it still picked up dust, dirt, and debris better than the Hoover. And even though Hoover won in the Sound test (but not by much) and Hard To Reach Places test, the Bissell still came out on top with its actual hard floor cleaning abilities, which in our opinion, is the most important criteria of all! If you are looking for an affordable, hard floor stick vacuum, the Bissell PowerEdge is the stick vacuum for you!

Vacuum Cleaning Tips

Remove Small Objects

Small objects can restrict airflow, therefore making your vacuums suction power weaker and making your vacuum unable to clean floors to the best of its ability.

Empty the Canister

Don’t forget to empty your vacuum canister! The debris and dust won’t throw itself away! Just like small objects, if your vacuum canister is full, your vacuum will not be able to work as effectively. Also…it will probably start to smell if you don’t empty it regularly! So make sure you’re routinely emptying your vacuum canister.

Vacuum Regularly

If possible, definitely try to vacuum at least once a week… MINIMUM! Not only will your floors look nice and clean, but dust and debris off your floors will also help your health! Dust is not good for allergies, so if you’ve ever wondered why your allergies are bad when you’re just at home, you should re-evaluate how often you’re vacuuming!

Vacuum Multiple Times

As previously stated, vacuuming should occur at least once a week, but the more vacuuming the better! Again, because it can and will be better for your health, but also because the longer dust, debris, dirt, and spills stay on your floors, the more long term damage they will do.

Choose the Right Setting

Make sure your vacuum is set to the correct mode while cleaning! Not only will this help you vacuum the floors effectively, but it will avoid damaging your floors as long as it’s on the right settings.

Final Thoughts

There are so many different vacuums on the market, but if you are looking for quality, performance, and affordability, you’ll find them with one of these vacuums. And while everything ultimately comes down to personal preference and what features are more important to you than others, both of these hard floor stick vacuums are great options that won’t break the bank. They also will not take up a ton of space wherever you store it like other traditional/carpet cleaning vacuums and they come with 2 year limited warranties.

How We Tested

We put Icy Hot’s cream and BioFreeze’s gel to the test to see if the BioFreeze premium price is worth the reward. We had three of our testers perform each of the tests to account for any differences in preference or to see if any testers had different reactions to the products. To really get the full effect of each product and to see which is the best topical pain relief cream we ran these tests after performing certain exercises:

Fatigued Muscles

After a full day of playing basketball, we applied Icy Hot to one knee & quad and BioFreeze to the other. We noticed the immediate cooling sensation Icy Hot had on our knee, eventually adapting to a warmer and more relaxed sensation, but it quickly went away. BioFreeze had the same feeling. It took longer to grasp that same feeling, but it did have a longer lasting effect on the applied area. The only difference between the two is that BioFreeze was not nearly as intense as Icy Hot was when it’s first applied.

Intense Muscle Soreness

Another test that we ran was applying both BioFreeze and Icy Hot to opposite biceps after a day of working them out in the gym. Much similar to our basketball test, Icy Hot once again had an immediate impact on our muscles, but the feeling quickly dissolved and  we had to reapply more of it. BioFreeze’s product took longer to kick in but it did provide more overall relief in the end.

Back Pain

Two of our three testers actually had back pain, but we had all three apply the topical pain relief creams to their lower backs. The results were more of the same, Icy Hot had the more immediate and intense sensation, but the BioFreeze lasted much longer and felt more effective.

Smell

Two of our three testers preferred Icy Hot’s smell over BioFreeze’s. Icy Hot has a very strong mint smell, whereas BioFreeze has a much more mild minty smell (mixed with a slight chemical smell) that most of our testers didn’t enjoy all that much.

All three tests unsurprisingly gave the same result. Neither topical pain relief cream adversely affected any of our tester’s skin. BioFreeze was our preferred product as it provided a longer lasting pain relief than Icy Hot. The only areas that Icy Hot outperformed BioFreeze were the smell and the immediate intensity of the application.
