It almost feels like this one goes without saying, but if you don’t currently have measuring cups, they will change your life for the better. Mixing Bowl Set

How to Clean Your Apartment: A Step-by-Step Guide

With extra time being at home, what better way to use this time to clean your apartment! Since we are spending most of our time at home, it is important to set time aside to do a deep dive clean AT LEAST once a week. Now is the perfect time to start a routine for when the world gets back to normal and lives become hectic once again. Lucky for you, we have a step-by-step guide for how to clean your apartment in the most productive way!

Step 1: Gather your house-cleaning essentials

In order to be efficient when cleaning, make sure you have all of the items you’ll need out of the closet, drawer, or cabinet. Having them out in the open and in one space makes it easy for you to grab and go to each room! Don’t forget to make this time fun as well. Put on some tunes or a TV show as background noise when you start this process! You’ll need the following items:

Trash bags
Gloves
Sponges
Dish soap
Glass cleaner
Multi-purpose spray
Disinfecting wipes
Toilet wand and cleaner
Foaming shower cleaner
Paper towels or cleaning cloths
Floor stick mop (we love the Bona or Swiffer!)
Vacuum
Duster

Step 2: Start with the kitchen

The best place to start when cleaning your apartment is the kitchen. This is because the kitchen gets most of the foot traffic day in and day out. Take out the trash and do all of the dishes in the sink with dish soap and a sponge. If there is any clutter (ex: dry dishes on the drying rack, appliances on the table, food not in the pantry) make sure to put these away too. You’ll want to use your multi-purpose spray and towels here to wipe down the counters, kitchen table, and even your kitchen faucet, stove top, and refrigerator.

Step 3: Time for the bathroom(s)!

Cleaning your bathroom is probably the most daunting place to clean. However, with all of the necessary cleaning items, it’ll go by in a breeze.

Wear your gloves when cleaning the bathroom! Start with your toilet. Spray the toilet bowl cleaner and make sure it covers the entire interior and don’t forget the bottom of the rim. Let the toilet bowl cleaner sit, we will come back to this last, as we want the cleaner/bleach to really work it’s magic. While we wait for the toilet, clean your shower next. You’ll want to use your foaming shower cleaner to clean the tub, tiles, and fiberglass. Then just simply turn your shower on to clean up the soap. After the shower, it’s time to head to the sink area. Be sure to put any clutter away and then start with your mirrors. Make sure you use glass cleaner and a cleaning cloth. After wiping the mirrors, use your multi-purpose cleaning spray and a cleaning cloth to wipe the counter. Don’t forget the sink basin and soap dispenser!

By now you have probably spent about 10-15 minutes cleaning up the bathroom. Take disinfecting wipes and wipe down the toilet from top to bottom, including the seat and underneath too. At this point you can go ahead and use your toilet wand to clean the interior of your toilet. Don’t forget to flush afterwards! Use another disinfecting wipe to wipe the door handles. Collect the garbage from the bathroom and wash your hands.

Step 4: The bedroom

In order to be efficient when cleaning your bedroom, be sure to take all dirty laundry to your washer and dryer and complete a load(s) while finishing up your chores. That way, by the time you’re finished cleaning your entire apartment, it’ll be time to fold the laundry you completed, which is the very last step. After putting a load in, it’s time to get to business. If your bed isn’t made yet, be sure to make it. Or, if you plan to wash your sheets, make sure this is the first load you complete. Pick up any clutter as well.

Use your duster to dust counter tops of your dresser, bedside tables, and in-between blinds. After dusting it is a good idea to take your multi-purpose cleaner and cleaning cloth and wipe these surfaces too. If you are doing a deeper cleaner, it is important to dust your ceiling fan, top of the doors, and picture frames. Before leaving, be sure to take a disinfecting wipe and wipe your door handles!

Step 5: The living room

We are halfway done my friend! Now that you are in the living room, you want to copy similar steps as the bedroom. Pick up any clutter and put away items in their homes, such as the TV remote and throw pillows/blankets. You’ll want to use your duster first and follow up with your multi-purpose cleaning spray and a cloth to wipe down all of the surfaces: fire place, TV stand, bookshelf, coffee table, etc.

Bonus: Light some candles in the living room! This is a fun step to make your apartment smell good. After all, who doesn’t like candles?!

Step 6: Handheld floor mop on HARDWOOD or TILE

It is a great feeling to know that all of the rooms are individually done. Now, it is time to clean the floors! If your apartment is all hardwood or vice versa, you can skip Step 5/6 and clean every single room. However, if your apartment is part hardwood and part carpet, use your floor mop first.

Don’t forget any floor space when using your floor stick mop! That includes your front entryway, the kitchen, bathrooms, etc. Make sure you are making the most out of your wet pad by making sure that you’re cleaning your floors until you notice it isn’t picking up dirt anymore. Have extra wet pads handy so it is easy for you to change them if necessary!

Step 7: Vacuum the carpet

First, empty your vacuum bag if it is not emptied already. Regardless if it is full or not, it is a great precaution in making sure everything gets vacuumed up. It is important to note that your vacuum plays a key role in your household. Remember all of the dust you dusted in the bedroom and living room? The vacuum will not only gather that dust that fell on the floor, but also dirt and crumbs in your carpet/rug. Lastly, use the specific attachments of your vacuum to clean your couch and any other tight spaces. You can say bye-bye to a dirty floor after step 5 and 6!

Step 8: Enjoy the clean

When your laundry is completed, make sure to fold your clothes, towels, or make your bed with your clean sheets. You will always bring all of the trash that you collected from each room and take that outside! Lastly, be sure to put away all of your household cleaning supplies you initially took out. We recommend utilizing a utility closet as a one-stop shop, or using under the sink cabinets to store the supplies.

All in all, cleaning your apartment isn’t so bad after all. With these 8 easy steps, you’ll be able to get the job done. It doesn’t hurt to ask family members to help with the process! How To Change Your Oil in 7 Steps

Changing your car’s oil is an important part of proper car maintenance. Consistent oil changes help to keep a car’s engine cleaner and help it to last longer. Although to some it may seem like a daunting task, we laid out how to change your oil in seven easy steps for you!

Floor jack & jack stands or ramps (vehicles with large clearance may not need these)

Parts Needed:

New Oil (check your owner’s manual for the quantity and type of oil needed)
New Oil Filter
New washer for drain plug (these will usually come in a kit with the new oil filter)

1. Raise the Car

Raise the front of your car (if your car has the engine in the front) using the floor jack or drive the car on the ramps. If using a floor jack, make sure to use jack stands for added safety. Most cars have two jacking points on each side, between the two wheels. Be sure to use a jacking point when raising your car.

2. Locate Drain Plug

Most drain plugs will be either on the bottom of the engine facing towards the floor or on the side of the engine facing out. For some cars, you may need to remove any plastic undertrays as these may block access to the drain plug.

3. Drain the Oil

Once you have located the drain plug, place the drain pan underneath the drain plug (if the drain plug is on the side of the engine, the oil won’t pour out directly underneath the drain plug). Now use your wrench to remove the drain plug. It helps to get it almost completely loose, and then use your fingers to finish removing the drain plug. Note that the oil will come out fast, so be prepared.

Helpful Hint: Run your engine for 2-3 minutes before draining the oil, this will help the oil drain faster.

4. Replace the Oil Filter

Once the oil draining has slowed significantly, locate the oil filter. Some cars’ oil filters are located underneath the car, while others may be accessible from the engine bay. Use the oil filter wrench to loosen and remove the oil filter. Drain any excess oil inside the filter into the drain pan. Now grab your new oil filter and install it using the oil filter wrench. Be careful not to overtighten the new filter (use the old oil filter’s “tightness” as a reference).

5. Reinstall Drain Plug

Make sure that your oil is no longer draining or just barely draining. Now locate your new drain plug washer and replace your old washer with it. Now reinstall the drain plug using your wrench.

6. Fill your car up with New Oil

Now you are ready to fill your car up with the new oil. They oil filler should be located on top of your engine and accessible from the engine bay. Take the cap off the oil filler, and insert your funnel. Pour the new oil into the oil filler. Do not fill to your car’s maximum capacity, fill it about 90% of your car’s oil capacity, then reinstall the oil filler cap.

7. Check Oil Level

Start your car and let it run for 2-3 minutes (if any oil warning lights stay on, turn the car off immediately). Now make sure your car is on a level surface and after a few minutes of the engine off, check your oil level using the dipstick. As a general rule of thumb, the quantity of oil needed to fill your car from the “minimum” mark of a dipstick to the “maximum” mark is about 1 quart of oil. Use this rule as a reference and fill your car with any additional oil needed. Cars do not need to have the maximum amount of oil, and generally it is safer to have just between the minimum and maximum marks on the dipstick.

Now that you have successfully changed your oil, make sure to properly dispose of your old oil. Most auto parts stores will be able to “dump” your old oil for you if you take them your drain pan.

Doing your own oil changes can save you time and money. It is a simple job that can be done at home and saves you from overpaying at the dealer.

How to Care for Your Baby’s Teeth

We all know how important personal hygiene is, especially when it comes to oral health. When we don’t take care of our oral health, we start to have other health problems. That is why it is especially important to start teaching our children the importance of caring for their teeth at such a young age. Since being a parent is much more than diapers, we put together this mini guide on caring for your baby’s teeth!

When Do Babies Start Growing Teeth?

Typically, babies begin the process of growing teeth at four months; however, you can start to notice as early as three months old. Most babies develop their first tooth around six months. There are a variety of stages and different key points to understand.

First, around three months old, babies start to learn about their mouths, resulting in more saliva and more things put into their mouths. This does not necessarily mean they are teething. Some signs to indicate if your child may be teething includes fussiness, drooling, sore and swollen gums, chewing on things constantly, to name a few.

Usually, the two bottom front teeth are the first to come in followed by the two upper front teeth. Your child may begin to chew harder on a lot more items and be crankier. You will be able to see the gums are highly sensitive and may even swell.

After these primary teeth pop through, teeth surrounding the front teeth as well as the molars will start to appear. Similar symptoms may occur with a potential increase in them. Some babies will not want to eat and could get a fever or diarrhea. This period lasts from around ten months to 22 months.

When the child reaches two years old, the main molars will start to develop. This stage can bring the most pain to your child. Try to find a way to calm your baby and help them teeth as pain-free as possible.

When to Start Brushing Your Baby’s Teeth

You can start taking care of your baby’s teeth as soon as they are born! After they are eating, make sure to clean their gums with a washcloth gently. Never put a baby to sleep with a bottle, because they can increase their chances of having tooth decay. Avoid cleaning baby products with your mouth.

As soon as that first tooth pops up, you should begin to brush their teeth. During this stage, you do not need to use toothpaste, but use a toothbrush made for babies and clean the teeth they do have as well as massage their gums.

Regularly check their teeth to see if more teeth pop up, or if you start to notice some tooth decay. Schedule your baby’s dentist appointment before their first birthday. If you would like your baby to use fluoride and your water does not contain it, be sure to talk to your dentist to get some at around six months.

If your child has a hard time wanting to brush their teeth, make it a fun time for them! Try singing a song or having a fun colored toothbrush for them to use. Allow your child to try brushing their own teeth and playing with a toothbrush. This will show them that it is not a scary or hard thing to do. Finally, it is essential to lead by example. Brush your teeth with them to show them how important it truly is to brush their teeth!

Cost of Cloth Diapers vs. Disposable Diapers

Cloth diapers can be expensive in the start-up. You will probably want around 20-25 on hand unless you plan to do laundry every single day. You will need to buy the diaper, inserts for the diapers if they didn’t already come with them, a spray to help keep the diapers clean, and of course, the laundry supplies to wash them consistently. A single diaper usually costs from 4 up to 20 dollars. So, if you were to get 25 of the most expensive cloth diapers, you are looking at most $500. Then you would just have to factor in your laundry costs including water and detergent. After a while, your cost could increase if you choose to filter out the old diapers for newer ones.

Disposable diapers, on the other hand, you just need to buy the diapers! Babies typically go through 8-10 diapers a day. If you end up using 10 diapers a day for a year, that’s 3,650 diapers! Buying in bulk will decrease your cost a little bit, but buying organic will increase them as well. On average, you can find diapers for about 20 cents per diaper. So, for only one year of diapers, you will spend around $730, or about $60 a month. Depending on when your child becomes potty trained, you will pay even more.

Overall, choosing affordable quality cloth diapers will be cheaper in the long run, but you will lose out on the convenience of disposable diapers.

The Best Maintenance Tips For Your Car

Owning a car can be a very rewarding experience. At the same time, maintenance and repairs can put a huge dent in your wallet. Luckily, there are several things that you can do yourself to stay ahead of costly repairs and unexpected breakdowns. That is why we compiled a list of the best maintenance tips for your car to keep it running strong and looking good.

When creating this list, we made sure to include items that the average person can perform themselves. This allows you to save money by not having to pay dealerships or independent repair shops for easy to do tasks. Additionally, this list will help you become more knowledgeable about your car, which helps you make more informed decisions on what you allow a dealership or repair shop to do on your car. We have all heard of repair shops and dealerships that try to “scam” their customers by recommending unnecessary repairs or by intentionally misleading their customer. Our aim is to equip you with the basic knowledge to protect yourself from that exact situation. So, here we go…..

1) Change Your Oil

This is by far the most important maintenance for any car. Think of engine oil as the human body’s diet. The more healthy a person eats, the better their body operates and the better they feel. Oil in your car’s engine begins to breakdown and become less effective after time and use. This means that the more you drive your car, the more your oil’s life is reduced. Most car manufacturers recommend that you change your oil in intervals between 3,000-10,000 miles depending on the type of car and type of oil. Check your owner’s manual for the recommended oil to use and the recommended oil change interval.

Another important tip for changing oil, is that you should change it at least once a year. Even if you don’t hit your car’s miles limit for oil life, engine oil breaks down over time so it is important to at least change it once a year.

2) Check Your Air Filter

Every car has an engine air filter that keeps away dirt, rocks, leaves, and anything else that shouldn’t be inside your engine. Over time, this filter can become dirty and clogged, which restricts the air flow into your engine. Typically these are very easy to access, so it should be very easy for you to check the air filter.

We recommend checking the air filter at least once a year. If the filter looks completely dark with dirt and grime, it is a good idea to order a replacement. Sometimes the air filters can warp, causing gaps where debris can slip past the filter and go straight into the engine. If you see that your air filter is warped, it is time to order a new one.

3) Check Your Brakes

It should be no secret that brakes need to be replaced on every car. The components of most cars’ brake systems are composed of brake pads, rotors, calipers, and brake fluid. Most of the time, brake pads only need to be changed. It is very easy to check your car’s brakes. If you have wheels with spokes that you can see through, you can use a flashlight to see how much material of your brake pad is left (otherwise you will need to take the wheel off). If you have less than ¼ of an inch left of material, it would be a good idea to order new brake pads. Generally brake pads can last anywhere from 20,000 miles to 75,000 miles depending on the type of car and the manner in which it is driven.

If you are replacing brake pads, it is a good idea to check your brake fluid as well. If it is extremely dark, you should replace the brake fluid when you change your brake pads. Your car’s rotors will probably need to be replaced as often as you replace brake fluid.

4) Check Tire Pressures & Rotate Tires

Tires are a huge expense item, but the life of your car’s tires can be extended with proper maintenance and care. Simply keeping your tire pressures at an optimal pressure is key to extending tire life and improving gas mileage. Your car’s owner’s manual should have a recommended PSI to keep the tires inflated at. Use a tire pressure gauge to check your tire pressures at least once a month to ensure they are at optimal pressures.

Rotating tires can also help extend their life. Rotating your tires simply means switching the front tires to the back, and the back tires to the front. This can only be done if your car has identical sized tires in the front and back. This should be performed about every 5,000 miles.

5) Check Your Serpentine Belt

This belt is typically on the front of your car’s engine and is attached to multiple pulleys. It runs important systems on your car including the A/C, engine cooling system, alternator, power steering, etc. It is an extremely important aspect of your car and you should always make sure it is in good condition.

If you ever hear a high pitched whine or squeal coming from your serpentine belt, you should change it. Otherwise, it is a good idea to check it a few times each year to make sure that there are no cracks on it and it’s not fraying.

6) Invest in an OBDII Scanner

Every modern car has a computer system that controls and monitors the engine and various electrical components of a car. When your dash has a check engine light on, it can mean something is seriously wrong with your car or only something minor is wrong. That is a scary light and doesn’t provide much info as to what the problem is. That’s where an OBDII Scanner comes in. These plug into your car’s OBDII port (which connects to your car’s computer) and can tell you exactly what is wrong with your car.With one of these tools, you can determine how serious the issue with your car is and if you can keep driving it or need to tow it directly to a repair shop. This tool can save your entire engine if the issue is a major issue, or it can keep you from spending a ton of money at a repair shop when the issue might be a minor fix that you can do yourself.
